The Schlowdown - CDT

I have felt like there's a void in my life lately. When I turn on the TV, I've been surprised to see ads for household cleaners, cereal and toys instead of suits (or rolled up sleeves) telling me how horrible candidate A will be for America/Pennsylvania/Centre County and how candidate B is the only answer, but will only share it if elected. My mailbox is a bit lonelier lately, the shiny, oversize post cards no longer fill it. In the past 2 weeks, neither Chelsea Clinton, Jay Paterno, Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama or Scott Conklin have called & left messages.

Regular library users may have noticed a couple weeks ago that they were greeted by a "crew" in the vestibule either clicking or asking you to fill out a survey. This is one way that we here at Schlow Library keep on top of the needs of the community as well as gathering usage statistics for future planning.

OK, if you REALLY don't want to pay more library fines extended usage fees (see my last posting) I have a couple quick hints for you all to avoid them. Since I know we have an incredibly diverse group of library patrons, I'll try to address as many different ways as I can.

OK, so I asked those of you who don't use the library why that is. Thank you to my sole responder. This blog's for you!

The way the economy is right now, so many of us are watching our dollars and cents. This includes watching our minutes and hours. it seems like a financial "crisis" makes us all more aware of the value of our time & money. I find myself grouping errands into one or two trips instead of the daily drive back into State College for a "Wally World" run. And becoming aware of that, it got me thinking... Why haven't I been doing this all along?

We're making changes all over the library, but the most significant change is the launch of our new website schlowlibrary.org ! Sometime this week, take a gander at the new format. We're hoping it will be easier to navigate and easier to find some of the really cool features that have always been offered, although hidden in the darker recesses of the site. I'll try to focus on some of the really helpful places to go on our site that should be easier to find now in this blog over the next weeks.

Labor Day is coming - how did that happen? Wasn't I just sitting at our super top-secret spot watching the Fireworks for 4th Fest? I have to say, my summer had a really poignant ending - spending a long weekend at the family farm in Wisconsin. Watching the kids drive 4-wheelers, coaxing the farm kitties into my son's arms with a foxtail, hiking on the farm, walking up the church road and listening to the ba-zillions of songbirds welcoming me "home" and spending time in the company of family and friends.

So, we're at the end of another Summer Reading Program Season (there are still activities going on - check them out at your favorite department in the library). This time of year always seems like a bit of a let down, the children's department isn't quite as full as usual, the circulation desk staff get a bit of a respite, and the books in the young adult department display for required summer reading is looking a mite empty as the beginning of the school year looms and kids realize that they've only got a little more than 2 weeks to get those books read! Yikes.

08-08-08: A date that has been considered lucky in China and the opening day of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. If you're one of the many people unable to attend in person, we've got a little taste of China here at Schlow going on as part of our First Thursday Celebration. We're hosting a dance group who will perform traditional Chinese dances as well as sing some traditional Chinese folk songs on Thursday night, August 7th at 7:00 pm - Hmmm 08-07-08-07:00 pm -- lucky? Maybe!  Easy to remember?

Well, now, THERE'S a headline! Thankfully, it's just an interactive murder mystery. I'm really excited about the upcoming event to be held on August 5th at 7 pm. There are quite a number of library employees (including yours truly) who will be "suiting up" for this fun and frenzied evening of sleuthing.
